Description

One of the gate outbuildings of the 'Koszyki' market hall at 61-63 Koszykowa Street in Warsaw built in the years 1906-1909 according to Juliusz Dzierżanowski's design. Despite protests of the city dwellers and heritage conservators, the market hall was demolished in 2006. Only two gate outbuildings from the side of Koszykowa Street with sculptural decor by Zygmunt Otto have been left. The market hall was a building of modern structure, in which steel riveted trusses made by Gostyński's enterprise were used. The outbuildings which have survived have elevations faced with stone and brick. The central of the facade in each of them is occupied by a large arcade closed with a flattened arch, surrounded by massive pinnacles and topped with a triangular gable. There are three entrances situated on the ground floor and a large glazed thermal window (divided into three parts) on the first floor. The sculptural decor is gathered in the entrance doorjambs and in the gable over the window. Floral motifs, including sunflowers have been applied near the entrances. Bull heads have been depicted in the window keys and there is a cartouche with the Warsaw coat of arms above them. Metal balustrades with geometric motifs with transformed floral motifs woven in them have been applied on the first floor. In 2012 Griffin enterprise undertook to renovate the market hall. The renovation is supposed to be completed in 2015.
