Description
The Wilam Horzyca Theatre at Teatralny Square in Toruń designed by Viennese architects Ferdinand Fellner and Hermann Helmer and opened in 1904 after 13 months of construction. Five years later the figures of Terpsichore and Melpomene by Ernst Herter were placed in front of the building entrance. The theatre, which has capacity of eight hundred, was designed in the rich architectural setting in the forms combining Neo-baroque and Art Nouveau styles. The vestibule with staircases, foyer, auditorium with balconies and boxes as well as the stage with technical rooms are distinct elements of the building body. In the years 1941-1942 the facade was simplified - the relief border of the arcade, the pylons with figures of eagles and majority of Art Nouveau ornaments were removed and windows were transformed. The warehouse building at the back of the theater building was also demolished but rebuilt in 1995. Since 2000 the Theatre has been systematically restored. Wilam Horzyca, producer and theatre reformer, was one of the most prominent personalities of the Toruń theatre. Since 1991 the International Theatre Festival Kontakt initiated by Krystyna Meissner has been organized here.
