Description

The edifice of the Monopol hotel at 5 Dworcowa Street in Katowice. The building was erected in 1902 according to Ludwik Goldstein's design for Arnold Lustig, the owner of the nearby Cafe Central café. It is a five-storey building erected on the U letter plan with an internal courtyard covered with a glass roof. The ground floor of the building is decorated with rustic quoins, faced with stone and separated from the rest of the building by the cornice. The elevations are topped with considerable gables with an Art Nouveau detail and faced with white clinker brick. The corner of the hotel is truncated and accentuated with a many-sided bay topped with a pointed dome. The architectural decor of anthropomorphic, floral, and animal motifs is concentrated mainly around window openings.
