Description

The market hall at 17 Piaskowa Street in Wrocław. The building erected in place of the former Sand Arsenal in the years 1906-1908 according to the design by Richard Plüddemann, a city building counsellor for civil engineering in Wrocław and a secret building counsellor as well as Heinrich Küster who, apart from performing other works, was a city building counsellor in Zgorzelec. The body of the building is asymmetric, covered with a high roof with a quadrilateral clock tower in the northwestern corner and with a smaller clock tower from the northern side. The main gates are situated in the gable walls on the axis of the nave. Lower aisles were placed on both sides of the nave and disrupted by two transepts from the northern side and one transept from the southern side. The elevations faced with red brick (the battlement of the clock tower, pinnacles, stone ashlars, blind windows, gothic arch windows) gained neo-Gothic nature referring to the defensive walls and the arsenal. An innovatory supporting structure in the form of six parabolic trusses from reinforced concrete giving lightness to the interior was applied during the erection of the building. The market hall in Wrocław belongs to the best and earliest examples of the usage of reinforced concrete in public utility buildings in Europe. Floral and animal motifs (fish and birds among vegetables and fruits) were applied for the decor of portals. There is a relief by Carl Ulbrich presenting a stallholder from Wrocław from the western side, in the corner of the clock tower.
