Description
The Copernicanum building in Bydgoszcz at 1 Kopernika Street built in the years 1903-1906 according to the design by architectural engineers Rudolf Zaar and Carl Vahl from Berlin. The southern frontage of the building faces 3 Maja Street and the western side I. J. Paderewskiego Street. Due to its location and surroundings the corner of the building has been architectonically accentuated. Over the roof there is an additional storey in the shape of a tower with a platform to observe the sky. A sundial is placed on the southern elevation of the eastern wing. A real secondary school administered by Germans was placed here until the end of the 1920/1921 school year. The Polish Municipal Natural Sciences Junior High School developed the teaching and pedagogic activity from 1921 to the outbreak of World War II. The edifice functioned as i.e. a military hospital during the Nazi occupation. After the war until 2007 various vocational schools functioned in the building. At present, the Faculty of Natural Sciences of the Kazimierz Wielki University in Bydgoszcz is located here.
