Academy of Commerce in Cracow

Cracow, 2/4 Kapucyńska Str., Straszewskiego Str.

Budowa
1904-1906

Description

The building of the former Academy of Commerce in Cracow at the corner of Straszewskiego and Kapucyńska streets is one of the best examples of combining the modernized historism and the Art Nouveau styles in the Cracovian architecture. The edifice designed by Jan Zawiejski (the author of e.g. Juliusz Słowacki Theatre created in the eclectic style) was built in the years 1904-1906. Both elevations are densely fragmented with lesenes, between which windows closed rectangularly, semicircularly or segmentally were situated in four storeys. The building is topped with the extended wavy attic in which the lesenes are transformed into pinnacles. The rounded corner is accentuated with the gable in the original form, with a clock in the cartouche. The extended gables are also placed in the closings of both elevations. Mikołaj Kopernik Complex of Schools of Economics no 1 is one of the facilities currently located in the building.
