Greetings!
I first met Maria at an IASSIST meeting in Scotland. I was honored when she invited me to speak at the seminar on "The role and function of a modern academic library" held at the Nicholas Copernicus University in Torun in September of 1995. It was at that meeting that the idea of what has become ICIMSS was first discussed. Little did anyone realize that in one year Maria Sliwinska, with the support of the Rector of the University, would have initiated an international center for upgrading the skills of eastern European librarians. With the support of numerous funding agencies, including initially, the Mellon Foundations, but more recently a variety of European organizations, ICIMSS grows and flourishes. It is an honor to be associated with this unique effort.
